San Diego restaurateurs Fay Nakanishi, Deborah Helm and Thomas Fitzpatrick, are the trio behind the restaurants: The Mission / Mission Beach, The Mission / North Park and The Mission / SoMa. The team has had years of experience in all aspects of the restaurant business, winning numerous accolades and awards for excellence in cuisine and service. Using their varied restaurant backgrounds, in 1997 the group joined forces in the original Mission Café and Coffeehouse in Mission Beach. Chef Fay Nakanishi fine-tuned the menu and created additional unique dishes that showcase the current menu while Thomas Fitzpatrick and Deborah Helm focused on customer service. While putting an emphasis on quality food and service The Mission evolved from a coffeehouse feel to a full-scale restaurant. Polishing the concept they opened The Mission / North Park in 1998, becoming an important part of the North Park renaissance and later winning BID San Diego Business of The Year. In 2004 they moved into their third location, the historic Rosario Hall in the budding East Village. The threesome work hard to distinguish their businesses from the many restaurants in San Diego. They work closely with their management team and employees on a daily basis to ensure excellence in cuisine and service. They also regularly update their menu to suit the demand of current trends and continually renovate and upgrade the three locations to enhance customer satisfaction.
The Mission loves to support the budding art scene in San Diego by displaying the works of local artists and allowing all proceeds to go directly to the artist. Participating as an active and positive member of the community is very important to us. In the spirit of giving back to the community, The Mission donates to a variety of charities throughout the year such as City of San Diego Literacy Programs, Mission Beach Women's Club, Humane Society, Planned Parenthood, Being Alive, etc. as well as annual fundraising events like Mama's Kitchen and the San Diego Zoo's Critters Event. We were also among one of the first and continue to participate in Dining Out for Life, a fundraiser to benefit The Center's HIV/AIDS prevention programs for Youth & Latinos and direct services for those living with HIV/AIDS.
Bringing global awareness to a local level, The Mission is leaning green. Caring about the environment, The Mission recycles, utilizes environmentally friendly biodegradable to-go cups and containers and non-toxic natural cleaning products. The Mission proudly serves Fair Trade Certified coffee, while directly supporting a better life for farming families through fair prices, direct trade, community development and environmental stewardship. Additionally, we have been highly rated by SDGE for energy efficiency by installing low-flow pre-rinse sprayers for our dish washing, upgrading our lighting to energy efficient lamps and installing door gaskets and air curtains on our refrigeration.
